Our Approach to Misdemeanor Offense

At Goukassian Law Firm, we understand that a misdemeanor charge can have a significant impact on your life, reputation, and future opportunities. The potential for incarceration can cause extreme anxiety and worry to you and to your loved ones.

Our dedicated attorneys are committed to providing you with a strong defense strategy tailored to the unique circumstances of your case. We will thoroughly investigate the facts, review the evidence, and challenge any weaknesses in the prosecution’s case. Our goal is always to fight for a dismissal. However, if dismissal may not be an option, the goal shifts to minimize the potential consequences you may face and, when possible, seek alternative resolutions such as reduced charges, diversion programs, or probation instead of jail time.

Whether you have been charged with assault, theft, DUI, drug possession, disorderly conduct, or any other misdemeanor offense, we will vigorously protect your rights, ensure your side of the story is heard, and work tirelessly to achieve the best possible outcome for your situation. We believe in open and transparent communication, keeping you informed every step of the way, and providing you with the guidance and support you need during this challenging time.

Understanding Michigan Laws Regarding Misdemeanors

In Michigan, misdemeanors are criminal offenses where jail time is possible. Misdemeanors are categorized into three classes based on their severity:

The mildest type of misdemeanors in Michigan is called a 93-day misdemeanor. If you are convicted of a 93-day misdemeanor, you could face fines of up to $500 and spend up to 93 days in a local jail. Some examples of 93-day misdemeanors include disturbing the peace, assault and battery, first-offense drunk driving, and shoplifting.

A one-year misdemeanor is a more serious offense. If you are convicted of a one-year misdemeanor, you could be fined up to $1,000 and spend up to one year in a county jail. For example, if you are suspected of a second-offense drunk driving, you may be charged with a one-year misdemeanor.

High court misdemeanors are the most severe type of misdemeanors. Although they are prosecuted similarly to felony charges, they come with lesser penalties. If you are charged with a high court misdemeanor, you could face up to two years in state prison and fines.

Regardless of the misdemeanor charge you are facing, it is essential to have a skilled criminal defense attorney by your side who can navigate the legal system, protect your rights, and work towards the best possible outcome for your case.

Misdemeanor Courts

All misdemeanors with the exception of high-court misdemeanors start and end in the city district court where the offense allegedly occurred. High-court misdemeanors may get bound over to the county circuit court where the offense allegedly occurred. All other misdemeanors begin at the district court and trial occurs at the district court.
